On Topix↑ One year Ingress + Guardian tips
↑ Ingress - Helios
↑ Ingress level 8 within a month
About a month ago, Ingress game developer Niantic released Pokemon Go on their platform in a partnered deal with Nintendo. But what they did not know is that they killed the game long before release, or writing the first lines of code.
Both games greatly benefit from outdoor exploration, going to new places. The downside is gear that is either farmed or awarded when leveling up. Farming is done at locations indexed through ingress, and submitting new portals has been discontinued for about a year or so.
Not a problem in most cities, which are cluttered with indexed POI. Most small villages are barely indexed as it was not beneficial to play there for the ingress playerbase. Clusters expanded within cities alot faster than the indexing of these less interesting smaller villages. Since pokemon has a lot more users, this turns into an issue. There is no way to expand the playfield at this moment.
So this game encourages exploration but will not allow you to add new discoveries from your journey. That roughly translates to going outside to visit an indexed area, and therefor discourages exploration. You end up going to the same spots because they are most beneficial for gameplay.
Sure, you might pull off a few roadtrips, or visit a handfull of cities, just like you would in ingress. But it is just walking along a static predefined grid that is far from complete. There are cities where you walk past the most beautiful unindexed artworks, simply because they are still pending approval within ingress, or have been relocated afterwards.
So all in all, for now, they can not deliver the promise of true exploration. You could still have a wander and get lost, but never with any benefit through gameplay.336 views ✍ 12 aug. 16 Tweet
